Don’t be taken for granted

My pet peeve because this is one that has happened to me. Some people are great partners and some people are great takers. To start with it can be that work is shared, flowers appear and a romantic dinner out is a regular on the agenda. Fantastic news all round and a happy life ensues.

Three months on and what were once acts of partnership and love are now seemingly part of your job description. They stop noticing you as soon as they believe the relationship is secure and go back to thinking of themselves.

My experience was as a man looking after a woman and running myself threadbare for the occasional thank you. Most situations are men brought up as mummy’s boys and expecting the same from their female partner.

It’s up to you whether you are willing to be a surrogate mother to an overgrown child or whether you believe that women are cast into this world for the purpose of cleaning and ironing for men. For what it’s worth, men are just as capable of household chores as women and with a bit of training can even rustle up a family meal. If you are both working or both retired, life should be a partnership of equals.

How soon after dating can you get a handle on the other person’s nature? Pretty soon is my take, just ask your man or woman to peel the spuds or iron something for you and see what reaction you get. Why not make it clear from the off that being someone’s skivvy is not part of the master plan?
