This is probably 1972 and I am in the royal navy aged 17. My mother worked in a city centre shop and fixed me up with a blind date with a shop assistant, Gaynor. I made the mistake of telling my navy friends and so Gaynor instantly became Gay Norman! I hade never been out with a girl and littlewonder. I was short, big eared, weighed six stones and had buck teeth not to mention being fashion challenged. Gaynor greeted me with a look of embarrassed loathing as we met for a slap up meal followed by disco (remember disco?). The meal was almost fast food as she suggested we skip both the starter and the desert. The disco (Rank) was the first I had been in and I had never danced since winning my junior school twisting competition in 1965!

We had one short dance together and then she left me without a word  for another guy on the other side of the room.

With the sounds of Jeff Beck and “hi ho silver lining” ringing in my ears, I set off for the bus stop home. Unfortunately, I was assaulted and robbed by a youth using a metal drinking vessel as a cosh. Somebody took pity and gave me my bus fare. Then as now, the police would be as useful as a chocolate tea pot.

So, no silver lining for me and no Gaynor. Still my mum did make me a Horlicks.
